About Douleurs Sans Frontières (DSF)

 

DSF’ mission in Cambodia is to improve the quality of life for people facing life-limiting illnesses, through palliative care and psychosocial support.

DSF goal is to strengthen access to palliative care in Cambodia through the following objectives:

  • To provide home based palliative care (HBPC) and psychosocial support to patients facing life-limiting illnesses and their families
  • To strengthen capacities of healthcare workers and medical students in palliative care and pain management
  • To support the MoH in strengthening cancer pain management and advocate for a better access to palliative care in Cambodia

 

Main responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the country director and the medical coordinator the nurse will be responsible for providing nursing care to patients facing life-limiting illnesses at the DSF health facility and at patients ‘home. In close collaboration with medical coordinator, doctors, pharmacists and other DSF’ staffs, the nurse will be responsible for providing care and counseling to DSF patients following established standards and procedures.

 

Duties include:

Palliative care consultations

Greeting patients and preparing them for medical doctors examination

Conducting vital signs measurements and other medical checkups for patients

Preparing equipment and ensuring examination room and home based medical kit are stocked with required supplies and materials

Supporting physician as required during examination

Providing home based nursing care for DSF patients

Explaining doctors’ prescription to ensure safe and effective use of medication

Requesting medications/preparing materials for home care

Arrange appointment date for patient and ensure it is kept up to date for consultation

 

Follow-up and support

Ensuring patient regular follow-up through phone and visit to patients’ home

Calling patient the day before appointment to ensure they are aware of their upcoming consultation

Providing health education to patients and caregivers concerning their diagnoses, healthy diets, hygiene promotion etc.

Providing counseling and psychosocial support through continuous follow-up and case management in collaboration with psychosocial worker

Providing appropriate referrals as needed

Follow up with patients referred by partners under supervision of doctors

Responding to phone call/messenger for any information inquiry 

 

Training and capacity building

Participating in awareness and training session on palliative care organized by DSF

Participating in the writing/producing of documents, guidelines or other supportive documents produced by DSF  

 

Administration

Updating patients’ folders/data and other related appointment information

Adhere to administrative directives with regards to work schedules, record keeping, patient communications, re-stocking of essential drugs, consumables and other medical supplies

Adhere to DSF chart and internationally accepted humanitarian principles

 

Position Reports to: Medical Coordinator

Job Requirements:

Education: A certified/registered Nurse

Skills and requirements:

At least 1 year working experience as a nurse

Experience providing counseling and social support to vulnerable patients

Previous NGO experience preferable

Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks in a dynamic, high pressure environment

Excellent communications skills both oral and written

Excellent self-motivation skills, extremely flexible, and ability to cope with stressful situations such as providing end-of-life care

 

Language Skills: Excellent communications skills in Khmer and English both oral and written
