Youth NGOs Discuss Post-2015 Development Agenda and the Role of Youths

by Khim Sambo Rothana, Communications Officer

Phnom Penh (October 13, 2014) – Around 70 youth representatives from different countries in Asia met and discussed today on the topic of “Look Forward: Post-2015 Development Agenda and Role of Youths” at KSSA/ICF Center, Phnom Penh.

Co-organized by the Cooperation Committee for Cambodia and the Peace Boat, the half-day workshop aimed to (1) increase awareness of youth participants on the progress of post-2015 development agenda; (2) exchange perspectives of civil society and Cambodian youth on post-2015 development framework; and (3) promote linkage between Cambodian youths and ASEAN youths on the perspectives of post-2015 development agenda and other possible future collaboration.

Eleven international outstanding students from Japan, Sri Langka, Philippines, and Myanmar attended this workshop to share their experience among participants.

In his opening speech, CCC Executive Director Mr Soeung Sarouen said that it was very important to have youths in our discussion today as they are strong partners to develop countries around the world. “Without youths, the world can collapse and be vulnerable. So, all leaders should have smart choices to engage youths for their sustainable development.” he added.

“Youths are power of the change for this world, and leaders cannot ignore them.” Mr Saroeun said, adding that we, the youths, need to frame ourselves and set the goals for this and next generation which rely on our hands.

Mr Kawasaki Akira, Executive Director of Peace Boat highly appreciated and deeply thanked CCC for organizing this important event and hosting eleven outstanding youths from Peace Boat. “The discussion for sustainable development among youths is not easy, but with this wonderful mixture of young people from diverse background, it will be an exciting and successful discussion.” he said.

In his open remark, Mr Ream Rothamony, Deputy Director of Youth Resource Development Program (YRDP) said that when Millennium Development Goads (MDG) was developed and ratified by 189 governments in 2000, young people were excluded in the decision making processes. “Then we, young people, seem to be just beneficiaries than the leaders, initiators or innovators for the MDG development.” he added.

“Youth must take opportunity to look ahead and determine their own future by showing themselves or playing as a role as valuable assets and being part of solutions.” he said.
