Civil society discuss, share updates of first quarter of 2014

Phnom Penh (April 01, 2014) – Senior representatives of NGOs working in Cambodia discussed and shared progress of first quarter of 2014 in a bi-monthly meeting at the Korean Society for Service in Asia (KSSA).

The half-day meeting, organized by Cooperation Committee for Cambodia (CCC), aimed (1) to update its members on CCC first 3 month progress, Governance Hub Program (GHP), and announcement to the CCC by-laws amendment, (2) to share the implementation on Inter-Social Accountability Framework (ISAF) and the update to the National Strategic Development Plan, and (3) to discuss on Civil Society Organization's Future Outlooks.

In her welcome speech, Ms Nop Vanthy, Executive Committee Member of CCC and Executive Advisor of World Vision Cambodia, said that “Information sharing is one of the most important roles for CCC as its number of members is increasing,” adding that some of CCC members are in different provinces, so CCC will improve its e-communication and insure that this kind of information sharing is in line with the current context of Cambodia.

“I highly appreciate the solidarity and commitment of NGO community led by CCC in implementing their work and playing their important roles for the sustainable development of Cambodia.” she said.

Dr El Sotheary, Head of Program of CCC, highlighted in her presentation on “Civil Society Green Paper” that, in the current context of Cambodia development,we had seen a need for CSOs to produce a common strategic vision and will have this fully and mutually complimented by other developmentactors for the sake of sustainable development in Cambodia,” adding that this was why this document was initiated.

According to Dr El Sotheary, there are eight themes of issues and solutions in the CSOs Green Paper including (1) Socio-Economic Development, (2) Governance, Anti-Corruption and Inclusive Partnership, (3) Legal and Judicial Reform, (4) Access to Information and Media, (5) Land, Housing and Eviction, (6) Environment and NRM, (7) Enabling Environment and Democratic Space, and (8) Electoral Reform.

All participants actively discussed and shared their comments on each theme of CSOs Green Paper during the meeting.

In his closing remark, Mr. Ernst Jürgensen, CCC EXCOM Member, highlighted that CSOs Green Paper was not only the important topic for today discussion, but also the important way and model for CSOs to work together for development in Cambodia. “As a membership organization, CCC plays key roles to facilitate for the sustainable development. If we are committed to what we do, we will be successful.” he said.
