Overview

We are a non-governmental organization who work with young people through our 4 schools in slum communities of Phnom Penh. A slum, as defined by United Nations agency UN-HABITAT, is a run-down area of a city characterized by substandard housing and squalor and lacking in tenure security. The people who live there face many challenges, and we are there to empower them to meet these challenges. Our community centers are run using local skills and basic ideas that work. The schools are housed in the heart of poor communities, in old houses that have been converted into learning centers. Students take part in a variety of programs, including studying English, learning about computers and participating in extracurricular activities. The centers have become a place for the kids in the community who are on the right path to meet like-minded friends and support each other. Leadership classes have been taught to over 180 teenagers from the areas, and have been the building block for the schools Leadership Teams; a group of committed students who volunteer and gain work experience. Health services are also provided free of charge to students and the communities, including testing, treatment, medicine, quality dental care and toothbrushes. We place students into jobs such as cleaning and data entry to help them stay in school. We also provide housing for 11 of our students. Since we started in 2006 we have seen amazing results and hope we can continue to support students to live up to their potential.
